The Secret History of the Connecticut Game Club

The Connecticut Game Club was founded in 1979 by Jeff Cornett, Lou Ceretta, Mark Rosa, Guido Scipione and another friend. It now meets on the second Saturday of each month to play miniatures, CDGs, RPGs. Eurogames, boardgames and anything else amusing. Rumors to the contrary, it is not an international conspiracy with roots going back as far as ancient Egypt, or if Plato is to be believed, Atlantis. There is also no evidence, as one misguided scholar has claimed, that dissident army officers during the reign of Akhenaten II of  the 11th Dynasty, spread Zartolas' gospel of gaming ("The gods are watching: win at any cost!") to India, Persia and Greece, from whence it was incorporated into the Roman Empire as the legendary Viri Hexagonii.  On the other hand relics have been unearthed which tend to support the notion that the flame of gaming was kept burning during the Middle Ages by a celtic monk living on a Hill near Avalon, named David MacRae, who copied meticulously recorded the rules of CIVILIZATION and illuminated the manuscripts by hand through nine editions.

With the invention of moveable type, (Gutenburg is rumored to have descendents in the CGC, along with Ceretta the Great and Ptolemy the Cheesy), gaming came into its own, and with it agitation for a club. Efforts to organize were dealt a serious setback during the Reformation however when an oversubscribed miniatures event escalated into the Thirty Years War with the ultimate result that many would-be adherents were exiled to the New World.

Rev. Ezekial Cornett, an unfrocked Unitarian, made the first documented attempt to form a game club in Connecticut. He was joined by the Earl of Whiskeyman, a deserter from the Hessian mercenaries named Hal Norman, and Luigi Ceretta, the proprietor of Tossham Inn in 1779. A half company of CGC club antecedents was formed for service during the American War of Independence. After it successfully plundered several Tory villages (Sergeant Eric Olin looted his own silver while a sister pelted him with dinner rolls,) the British dispatched a punitive expedition led by Benedict Arnold to attack the Continental armories in Westport and Ridgefield, Connecticut. This "historical" event was recently recreated by descendent Tom Cusa using 25mm figures and the computer moderated miniature rules system Carnage & Glory. No dice were harmed during the recreation.

During the 19th Century demand for a clean, well-lit gaming venue grew. Proponents may have achieved better traction if their savings had not been lost as a result of their summer gaming convention being cancelled in the wake of of Atlanta being burned. CGC ancestors fought on both sides of the American Civil War, but not at Gettysburg where they unanimously proclaimed, "the terrain here is all wrong."  Their offspring sent volunteers to Cuba in 1899 and Harbin in 1905. Advice to Gen. Joffre in 1914 on the virtues of DIPLOMACY -- particularly the simple expedient of 'Army BURgundy to MUNich' -- might have brought World War I to a rapid close, had it not been foolishly ignored by the French General Staff. Regardless, Nigel Marsh denies his father cracked the famous Enigma Code while working for British Intelligence in 1941. He was busy flying Spitfires into the Channel with Biggles Jr. There was a spot of bother recently when the Illuminati called unnecessarily for serious scrutiny of our club elders subsequent to a 1930's vintage flyer being unearthed in St. Peterburg with the CGC logo and a caption that read: "Proud sponsor of the NKVD pointblank marksmanship team".

Since our visionary founder Jeff Cornett has moved on to greener pastures -- well, Atlanta anyway -- we have grown to 50+ stalwart members, but then we run out of toes and fingers to count. The club is open to board games, card driven games, hex games, plus historical and fantasy miniatures.

"I didn't fire [General MacArthur] because he was a dumb SOB.
He was...but that's not against the law for generals.
If it was, half to three-quarters of them would be in jail."
